Coach of the Year Recommends High-Flying ‘Maggie’

As track and field athletes prepare for regional and state championships, a national high school track coach of the year recommends the young adult novel, Maggie Vaults Over the Moon, to help inspire them on their personal quest for greatness.

Coach Bolt recommends ‘Maggie’

Dennis Bolt has coached at Hillsboro (KS) High School for 25 years. And during that time, hundreds of his athletes have qualified for the state track meet, including 36 state champions! Bolt’s boys’ teams have won three class 3A team titles, and his girls’ teams have won two team titles.

In recognition, Bolt was honored as the National Federation Boys Coach of the Year in 2004.

It’s official!

Maggie’s blog is a new affiliate site of the USA Track & Field (USATF) online store, which is a pretty big deal for friends and followers of storybook heroine, Maggie Steele.

USATFLOGOAFFILIATESITE2USATF is is the national governing body for track and field in the United States. Its online store offers a wide selection of official  merchandise such as bags, team gear, and performance apparel.

Proceeds go directly toward funding a variety of USATF programs and initiatives, ranging from youth activities to elite athlete development and support of Team USA.

‘Maggie’ Celebrates Her Vault into Kansas History

Today is Kansas Day, marking the admission of Kansas as the 34th state in the Union, on January 29, 1861.

StateSealWe’re also celebrating the fact that Maggie Vaults Over the Moon has found its place on the bookshelves of Kansas history.

The teen sports novel has been added to the Wulfmeyer Special Collections section of the Wichita Public Library.

The Wulfmeyer Special Collection contains books about Kansas pioneers and cowboys and others who shaped the bold history of the Sunflower State. The collection also includes the inspiring story of Maggie Steele, the gutsy farm girl from fictional Grain Valley, Kansas, who overcomes tragedy and soars to new heights through the daring sport of pole-vaulting. Author Grant Overstake reads Maggie at Watermark Books in Wichita.

The Battle of the Books is a popular reading contest for 5th and 6th graders in the district, which includes 25 elementary schools in south central Kansas. The purpose of the program is to encourage students to read good books and have fun competing against students from other schools. The Jeopardy-like team competitions begin in March. Continue reading
