Maggie Readers Prep for ‘Battle of the Books’

After months and months of intense reading, the brainy bookworms from Church of the Holy Spirit School are prepped and ready for the Battle of the Books competition in the Wichita Diocese Catholic Schools.

The annual reading contest for 5th and 6th graders begins this week in the diocese, which includes 25 elementary schools in south central Kansas.

The Jeopardy-like team competition will test their knowledge of this year’s titles, including Maggie Vaults Over the Moon by Wichita author Grant Overstake.

Overstake met with youngsters from Church of the Holy Spirit School to help them prepare for competition, and to share a little about the process of writing a novel.

“There’s no way to know in advance what questions they’ll be asked, so we spent time reviewing the characters, setting, plot, and themes,” he said, adding, “It was inspiring to see how excited they are about reading. This is a great program.”

‘Maggie’ Author to Present Student Assemblies and Workshops through Arts Partners Program

Grant Overstake is a new Teaching Artist for Arts Partners of Wichita. He will present student assemblies and writing workshops in Wichita and surrounding areas.

Grant Overstake, author of the young adult novel, Maggie Vaults Over the Moon, has joined Arts Partners of Wichita.

ArtsPartnersLogoAs a Teaching Artist, he will present assemblies and writing workshops for students from 4th grade through high school in Wichita and surrounding areas.

Arts Partners of Wichita is affiliated with the national Young Audiences Arts for Learning network. Its goal is to inspire creativity and learning by using the arts to enhance the classroom experience for students.

“I’m honored to be invited to join Arts Partners,” Overstake said. “It’s a privilege to be included on the list of the truly amazing local artists who devote their time and talents to help educate and inspire the next generation of creative thinkers.”

A Wichita native, Overstake attended Buckner Elementary, Brooks Jr. High, and Heights High School. His novel can be found on library shelves in public schools in the district as well as in local parochial schools. Continue reading
