JAMESTOWN, Kansas — Tailwind Pole Vault Club pledged a 2-Day Summer Camp, valued at $250, for a vault fan who contributes $225 to Maggie’s Audiobook Campaign!

Tailwind Camps (with meals and snacks) will be held on multiple dates from June through August. Follow-up sessions are free!

Today is Kansas Day, marking the admission of Kansas as the 34th state in the Union on January 29, 1861.

StateSealWe’re also celebrating the fact that Maggie Vaults Over the Moon has found its place on the bookshelves of Kansas history.

The teen sports novel has been added to the Wulfmeyer Special Collections section of the Wichita Public Library.

The Wulfmeyer Special Collection contains books about Kansas pioneers and cowboys and others who shaped the bold history of the Sunflower State. The collection also includes the inspiring story of Maggie Steele, the gutsy farm girl from fictional Grain Valley, Kansas, who overcomes tragedy and soars to new heights through the daring sport of pole-vaulting. Years spent as a journalist embedded in Kansas wheat country helped Grant Overstake create a vivid setting for the story,  in which a high school senior named Maggie Steele struggles to overcome a family tragedy and is confronted by a decision faced by many  rural teens: Stay home and save the family farm or pursue the life of her dreams?

Overstake, the former editor of the small-town Hillsboro (Kansas) Star-Journal, places the story near the fictional town of Grain Valley, Kan., which, in real life, could be anyplace where the grain elevator is the busiest place in town, especially at harvest time. Continue reading

PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil (Oct. 25) — Storybook heroine Maggie Steele received a huge honor at the World Masters Track and Field Championships, when two gold medal winning pole-vaulters — Allan Williams and Sue Yeomans of Great Britain — paid a special tribute to Maggie Vaults Over the Moon.

Speaking for the characters in the fictional community where the story is set, Overstake said, “We’re all teary eyed here in Grain Valley, Kansas. What a wonderful and thoughtful tribute. It’s just super, super great!” Continue reading

Storybook heroine Maggie Steele is winging her way West for the fourth annual Valley Vaulters Halloween Vault this weekend in beautiful Murrieta, California.
