PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil (Oct. 25) — Storybook heroine Maggie Steele received a huge honor at the World Masters Track and Field Championships, when two gold medal winning pole-vaulters — Olympic Champion Allan Williams and Sue Yeomans of Great Britain — paid a special tribute to Maggie Vaults Over the Moon.
Williams and Yeomans posed for a photo on his Facebook page with a caption: “Grant Overstake’s brilliant pole vaulting novel inspires Allan Williams and Sue Yeomans to Gold medal winning performances at The World Masters Championships.”
Speaking for the characters in the fictional community where the story is set, Overstake said, “We’re all teary eyed here in Grain Valley, Kansas. What a wonderful and thoughtful tribute. It’s just super, super great!”
Maggie Vaults Over the Moon is the story of Maggie Steele, a gutsy Kansas farm girl who overcomes hardships and soars to new heights as a pole-vaulter. The novel has been endorsed by U.S. Olympic pole-vaulters, coaches, teachers, and school counselors for its inspiring message for young people. The author is delighted that his story is inspiring masters athletes over the moon as well.
“Allan Williams and Sue Yeomans are two of the greatest people in the sport,” Overstake said. “There are so many life lessons to be learned by overcoming that crossbar, and these two are very active in Great Britain, coaching and inspiring vaulters of all ages. They enthusiastically remind us that pole-vaulting is a great activity for the young and young at heart.”
